I'm working with SharePoint and need to ensure that the documents stored on the platform are securely encrypted. What are the best practices or methods to enable document encryption in SharePoint? Are there built-in features or third-party tools that I should consider?

  • @pgSystemTester Haha, nope. I am new to SharePoint and PowerApps, and trying to figure out how to keep my files secure. Any tips on how to encrypt documents? – ye_c_ Commented Feb 3 at 9:59

SharePoint has built-in file encryption:

  1. Encryption at Rest: SharePoint uses BitLocker for disk-level encryption and per-file encryption with unique keys for each file. This ensures that every file and its updates are encrypted using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) with 256-bit keys.

    Reference:Encryption of data at rest.

  2. Encryption in Transit: Data transmitted between clients and servers, as well as between data centers, is protected using SSL/TLS connections with 2048-bit keys.

Reference: Encryption of data in transit.

  3. Customer Key: For additional control, you can use Customer Key to manage your own encryption keys for SharePoint and OneDrive.

Reference: Encryption for SharePoint and OneDrive, Microsoft Teams, and Exchange.
